Title: Fun with Big Books”--Effective ways to use large size books in different
classroom situations

Program Schedule
- Ice breaking activity--circle game. In a circle, we passed a stuffed animal,
saying our own names. Repeated the same thing saying the name of the person
standing next to you. - Short introduction-about the SIG, about the Tokyo Gathering, about the
theme. - Naoko read A Teddy Bear (Apricot) (Big book, student book, workbook,
CD available) - Got into 2 groups (group 1--large group situation, group 2--small class
situation) and designed lesson plans using the book.
Target age: 6-7 year-olds; 30 students (large group) 6-7 students (small
group)
Planned lesson time: 25 min. (reading and activities) - Sharing: Each group presented their ideas

Preparation:
Read the book and think about the characteristics of the book.
What is the message? (may have your own idea)
Read the back cover, observe the pictures
Before reading:
Bring in the theme through simple activities, exercises (share personal,
stuffed animals, etc.)
Visualization (for slightly older students); expand imagination prior to reading
Go over the vocabulary using flash cards, realia, movements, songs relating to the topic (“Head, shoulders, knees and toes,” “One little finger, ” etc.)
During reading:
Just read through
With some techniques: Slide the pages when turning the page (as to show little by little)
Ask questions:
--predicting (ask what is going to happen next)
--confirming (to see if students understand)
--interacting (to involve students, to keep students' attention)
Read with action/movement to support understanding
After reading: to consolidate the readings, to expand imaginations and experience
Activities to elicit the vocabulary, phrases introduced in the book
Personalize--activities to personalize the findings and learnings

instructor retells the story, students with their eyes closed, listen and imagine each of the situations as described by the instructors.
